The Geological Origins of Stawamus Chief Mountain
The second installment in the Howe Sound Biosphere’s Lunch and Learn Series, co-hosted with Tourism Squamish.

Join us at the Squamish Adventure Centre for Dr. Bob Turner’s “I am a Geologist” series, this session focusing on the iconic Stawamus Chief Mountain in Squamish, BC.

This event is ideal for anyone interested in geology, the natural history of the Howe Sound Biosphere Region, and the formation of its unique landscapes. Hikers, rock climbers, and lovers of the outdoors will gain new insights into the Stawamus Chief, including its cultural significance for the Sḵwx̱wú7mesh People.

Volcanologist and professor Dr. Steve Quane, a founding member of the Fire and Ice GeoRegion, will provide the geological context of the region’s geosites, enriching attendees’ understanding of these legendary landmarks.

About the speakers:

• Dr. Bob Turner holds a PhD in Geology, is a retired federal scientist, former mayor of Bowen Island (2005–2011), and an honorary founding member of the Howe Sound Biosphere Region Initiative Society. He also produces films about the Salish Sea region.

• Dr. Steve Quane earned his PhD in Volcanology from UBC and has served as a professor, museum director, and National Geographic Explorer. He currently teaches field courses in Systems and Sustainability at UBC while researching volcanic landscapes and developing interpretive materials for the Sea to Sky Region.
